Packing for a group trip is a balance: bring what you need, leave behind what you do not, and make sure it all fits in something you can actually carry. Here is the advice we give every class before they set off.
Travel light, and carry your own bag
One medium bag you can lift and a small day pack is plenty for most trips. If you cannot carry it up a flight of stairs yourself, it is too heavy. Soft bags are easier to store on coaches than hard cases.
Pack for the weather you will actually get
Check the forecast for your destination the week before you leave, not the season in general. Layers work better than one heavy coat, and a light waterproof earns its place in any bag.
Keep the essentials in your hand luggage
Your ID card, any documents, medication, a phone charger and a change of clothes should stay with you, not in the hold. If a checked bag goes missing, you still have everything that matters.
Bring comfortable shoes you already trust
Most graduation trips involve a lot of walking. This is not the trip for brand-new shoes. Bring a pair you have already broken in and know you can wear all day.
Leave room for the trip home
Souvenirs, gifts and the odd impulse buy all need somewhere to go. Pack with a little space to spare, or bring a foldable bag for the journey back.
Get the packing right and the trip starts smoothly. Everything after that is just enjoying it.
